1. CATALOG DESCRIPTION:
This is a
lecture course covering the major art tends and their place in history, art
media and technique, criteria for evaluating plastic art and its relationship
to other arts.
2. COURSE CONTENT:
In this course students will be introduced to the great masterpieces of world art with emphasis on the artifacts which represent the early civilizations and the cultures of Western civilization. Artistic techniques and media will be discussed as they relate to the particular culture which developed them.
3. RATIONALE FOR THE COURSE:
This is offered as an enrichment course and is part of the general education requirements under the heading, Search for Meaning and Aesthetics.
4. SKILLS AND BACKGROUND REQUIRED OR
EXPECTED:
There is no prerequisites, and no artistic ability is required. Students must be able to take notes from the lecture material, and be able to read and understand the text.
5. TEACHING METHODOLOGIES AND
ANTICIPATED CLASS SIZE:
By means of slide-illustrated lectures and some classroom discussion, the unfolding of the story of art will be studied. The present classroom (FA201) will hold 40 students.

6. ADDITIONAL COURSE DESCRIPTORS:
The products of art are inexorably tied to the historical events contemporary to them; thus, the study of art is also the study of history. Lectures and class discussions will stress why a particular culture produced the kind of art it did.
7. LEARNING OBJECTIVES FOR STUDENTS:
Students will
acquire the ability to visually identify and analyze the major styles of art
and evaluate the aesthetic significance of individual works produced by various
cultures and civilizations from prehistoric times to the 20th century.
8. METHODS OF EVALUATION:
Four(4) exams
consisting of Multiple Choice (25%), True/False (25%), and Slide Identification
(50%). Grades based on total
accumulated points.

“Art Past/Art Present”, Wilkins
& Schultz, Prentice-Hall.
