CATALOG
DESCRIPTION:
This course is an exploration of visual ideas and images in drawing, painting, 3-D design, and other studio techniques. It involves studio work and island field trips.
2.
COURSE
CONTENT:
Class will be structured to experiment with a wide variety of media and methods in order to acquire basic studio skills. Introduction to utilizing visual elements and principals of design will also be encouraged. Various styles or art movements such as Realism, Impressionism, Cubism and Abstraction may be introduced to encourage both artistic skills and art appreciation.
3.
RATIONALE FOR
THE COURSE:
AR102 is an
introductory course designed to familiarize students who have no background in
the arts and provide a foundation in art appreciation towards the process of
creating and perceiving a work of art.
In addition, hands-on skills will prepare students for future
professional occupations by developing basic hand-eye coordination in relation
to careers that utilize artistic craftsmanship as a marketable skill.
4.
SKILLS AND
BACKGROUND REQUIRED OR EXPECTED:
Other than the
desire to experiment and create visual works of art, the non-major is not required
to have any specific artistic art talent or prior art training.
5.
TEACHING
METHODOLOGIES AND ANTICIPATED CLASS SIZE:
Upon
completion of each art project, students are expected to participate in a
dialogue of critique sessions. Students
will learn to evaluate a work of art objectively and with a critical eye. This segment of the lesson will also help
students comprehend and define qualities that make an art before each
assignment to demonstrate a step by step approach to the various studio
techniques. Because of the individual
attention and supervision required for works in progress, class will be limited
to a total of 20 students.
