1.             CATALOG DESCRIPTION:

Basic Design is an introduction to the principles and elements of two-dimensional visual organization.

 

 

2.             COURSE CONTENT:

Definitions, Design Vocabulary, Concepts, Historical Development Basic Elements: line, shape, mass/volume, space, types of ordering, value, color, texture.

Principles of Design:

Space/Control: architectural, environmental, figurative, miniature/small

Materials: choosing a media and technique that involves idea, expression and personality, selection of actions and construction methods that are relevant to ideas and emotions of projects.

Ideas: how to develop an idea, unique imagery for each individual, signs vs. symbols

Craftspersonship: work with materials that agree with the idea, also selection of materials for logical fabrication and/or forming process.

Examples: both historical and contemporary

 

3.             RATIONALE FOR THE COURSE

This course is offered as an integral part of a traditional studio program in art.  Knowledge of the basic principles of two dimensional design are required for the understanding of all aspects of visual art.  Student gains an understanding of how and why artists make decisions in the creative process.  This course seeks to present these skills, with which students can analyze three dimensional problems and apply them to their own work.

 

4.             SKILLS AND BACKGROUND REQUIRED OR EXPECTED:

Student should be willing to explore various media conceptually.  The student should expect to put in many hours beyond class time to complete assignments.  The student should have some skills and proficiency in drawing.  Students should be capable of extensive independent reading.  The student must be willing to keep an extensive journal to be submitted for critical evaluation.  The student should have an interest in the arts.

 

5.             TEACHING METHODOLOGIES AND ANTICIPATED CLASS SIZE:

Class size would be limited to 16 students.  A studio course which introduces concepts, topics, and problems within set parameters through the use of audio visual aids, such as slides, filmstrips, films, and videos.  The student will then work towards deadlines and be involved in critical analysis of their work.

6.             ADDITIONAL COURSE DESCRIPTORS:

Students in this course are constantly required to provide critical evaluations of their work being presented.  Students will explore forms based on ideas and emotions; forms based on classical form study; forms based on an architectonic approach, forms based on the formal principles of design.  Through studio work, decisions in the creative process, exploration of material, verbal comment, and class discussion, the students will develop the vocabulary necessary for critical/analytical thinking.
