Course Number: CS200 College (or sponsoring unit): CAS.

Course Title: Computer Applications & Lab Credit Hours: 3.

Catalog description: The course covers preparation, storage, and processing of data, documents, and illustrations; graphing, manipulating and simple analysis of data, computer-to-computer communications and file transfers; use of UOG network resources; and introduction to computer languages.

Course Content: The following topics will be covered in CS200:

• • Windows management; e.g.,
  • Window resizing.
  • Window movement.
  • Click, double click, and right click.
  • Using the control panel
  • Using Windows Explorer
  • Basic word processing:
  • Drafting letter and resumes.
  • Using headers, footers, & footnotes.
  • Inserting graphics.
  • Using tables.
  • Using spreadsheets:
  • Managing cells & data entry.
  • Using formulas.
  • Inserting charts and pie charts.
  • Database management systems:
  • Cover basic relational database management concepts.
  • Name fields and data entry.
  • Submit queries.
  • Generate reports.
  • Communication software:
  • Access UOG mail programs.
  • Design web pages on the UOG intranet.

Rationale for the course: This is the basic computer literacy class. All students should have working knowledge of the above topics.

Skills and background required or expected: The student should have passed MA085 – Level II.

Teaching methodologies and anticipated class size: The course meets 4 hours a week for 16 weeks. 20+ students are expected.

Learning objectives for students: Upon course completion, students can

  • Do word processing.
  • Construct spreadsheets.
  • Build relational databases.

Methods of evaluation: Half of the course grade will come from weekly homework assignments. The remaining half of the grade will be based on attendance, one midterm exam and one final exam, used to assess basic mastery of the course material.
